on our 1/4 mile drag and oval track cars. We spent the time match aligning the intake and exhaust ports to the manifolds and the gasket and removing excess flashing from the casting process, no polished surfaces.
On a different note of surface roughness on my high speed hydroplanes we roughen the bottom water contact surface to promote turbulance as well as satin finish the props rather than high gloss. Both improve speed as well as bite to the water.
